ProEnzyme produces and supplies papain for food, feed, industrial, oral-care, cosmetic and qualified research customers. Our range includes Ultra Refined Papain Powder and Stabilized Papain Powder from 50 TU to 1100 TU, Ultra Refined Papain Liquid and Stabilized Papain Liquid from 60 TU to 200 TU, Crude Papain, Food Grade Papain, Feed Grade Papain and meat tenderiser in powder and liquid formats. This guide explains the range in simple terms so buyers can ask for the right starting grade.
Start with enzyme activity, not only the product name
Papain is a protease obtained from papaya latex. Its job is to break protein chains into smaller pieces. The speed and extent of that reaction depend on enzyme activity, but the number on a specification is useful only when the unit and test method are understood. A result stated in TU should be compared with another result only when both suppliers use the same assay, sample basis and calculation. A 500 TU product is not automatically “better” than a lower-activity product. The correct grade is the one that can be measured, distributed and controlled in the customer's process.
Share the substrate, pH, temperature, contact time, batch size, mixing method and target result before requesting a grade. ProEnzyme can then discuss a sensible activity range and format for evaluation. Production trials should compare more than one activity level with an untreated or current-process control.
Ultra refined papain powder: 50 TU to 1100 TU
Ultra Refined Papain Powder is intended for applications that need a clean, consistent powder and a clearly defined activity. The wide 50–1100 TU range supports both lower-activity formulation work and concentrated industrial trials. Powder is convenient for dry blending, premixes and transport. It also gives formulators flexibility when the finished product already contains dry ingredients.
Refining can help where colour, odour and non-enzyme material need closer control, but the exact limits must come from the selected specification. Buyers should request the product specification, batch certificate of analysis and safety data sheet rather than relying on a general website description. Food, feed, cosmetic and oral-care suitability must be confirmed separately for the exact grade.
Stabilized papain powder: practical activity retention
Enzymes can lose activity when exposed to heat, moisture, unsuitable pH or incompatible ingredients. Stabilized Papain Powder is designed to give manufacturers a more practical activity profile during the stated storage period and formulation process. It may be useful in premixes, feed trials and production schedules where material is stored before use.
Stabilized does not mean indestructible. The package must remain sealed, dust must be controlled and the storage conditions on the specification must be followed. The carrier or stabilization system may also matter to the finished formulation. Tell ProEnzyme about any ingredient restrictions, declaration requirements or compatibility concerns before qualification.
Ultra refined and stabilized liquid papain: 60 TU to 200 TU
Liquid papain can be easier to pump, meter and distribute than powder. It may reduce the need for a separate wetting step and can fit automated dosing, marinades, brines, beverage trials and liquid protein-hydrolysis systems. ProEnzyme offers Ultra Refined Papain Liquid and Stabilized Papain Liquid from 60 TU to 200 TU. The refined option focuses on a controlled liquid input, while the stabilized option is designed around activity retention under its stated storage conditions.
A liquid product must be checked for preservation, microbiological limits, storage temperature and compatibility with water, salts, flavours, surfactants or other formulation ingredients. Pumpability at plant temperature also matters. Before scale-up, verify dosing accuracy and confirm that the enzyme reaches the whole batch evenly.
Crude papain versus refined grades
Crude Papain is a less-refined material from papaya latex. It may be suitable for customers with downstream refining, standardisation or technically controlled industrial processes. Natural variation can be wider than with refined grades, so colour, composition, activity and other quality limits should be reviewed batch by batch.
Crude Papain should not be assumed to be food grade, feed grade, cosmetic grade or pharmaceutical grade. Those descriptions require a specific specification and the right quality and regulatory evidence. Buyers should state the final use at the beginning of the enquiry so unsuitable material is not evaluated for a sensitive application.
Food grade, feed grade and meat tenderiser
Food Grade Papain is evaluated in processes such as meat tenderising, beer clarification, food protein hydrolysis and other controlled food-manufacturing steps. Food-grade status does not create automatic approval in every country. Processing-aid rules, allergen information, permitted use and labelling must be checked for the destination market.
Feed Grade Papain is designed for animal-feed and feed-ingredient trials. Species, diet, pelleting temperature, storage and the complete formulation can change the result. Performance claims require suitable animal evidence. ProEnzyme's Meat Tenderiser is available in powder and liquid formats so processors can choose between dry blending and metered addition to marinades or brines. Too much enzyme or contact time can over-soften meat, so the final cooked texture must be part of validation.
What a serious papain quotation should include
A useful quotation is more than a price per kilogram. It should identify the product, format, activity, assay method or reference, pack size, storage conditions, shelf life and documents available. Commercial buyers should also share the expected annual volume, trial quantity, delivery location and required timeline. If the product will be exported, destination-country documentation should be discussed early.
For qualification, request the current specification, a representative or batch COA, SDS, packaging details and relevant grade statements. Confirm whether the trial sample and future commercial material will follow the same specification. Activity should be checked again if the customer repacks, blends or stores the enzyme under different conditions.
Why direct producer support matters
Buying from a papain producer and supplier makes the technical conversation more useful when product and application questions are handled together. ProEnzyme asks what the enzyme needs to do, how it will be added, what the customer can measure and which documents are required. This helps narrow the starting grade before expensive plant work begins.
No supplier can guarantee a result without understanding the process. The practical route is to select an appropriate format, run controlled trials, measure a clear endpoint and confirm performance at scale.
